Giving Tuesday, New Zealand leads the world

Giving Tuesday is a globally celebrated day of generosity. It’s a call-to-action for people around the world to donate money, time and talent to the causes they care most about. The day is also intended to signify the kickoff to the charitable giving season surrounding Christmas and annual year-end giving — though, for many, giving is a year-round activity.

With 27,000 charities in New Zealand it can be a challenge for donors to choose a cause, there are so many! When deciding how to give consider what values are important to you and what charity or cause best fits with those values? Perhaps it’s the alleviation of poverty, the furthering of education, medical research, the environment, or supporting a local cause or Foundation. The causes are endless and only you will know what values are the best fit for you.

And, while many of us see physical fundraisers shaking buckets on the streets, there are so many other ways to give! Here are some:

  • Contact your local Volunteer New Zealand office and offer some time to a local organisation
  • Donate some goods to your local charity shop
  • Whip something up or take some cans into your local food bank
  • Offer your expertise to a local club or school
  • Sign up to regular monthly giving with a charity
  • Donate to a current Givealittle cause
  • Speak to your lawyer about including a favourite charity or cause in your Will

Ways to give are many and varied and it’s wonderful to have one day a year where we can focus on the gift of generosity.

#GivingTuesday is not only uniting New Zealanders; it’s bringing together people from around the world. It was started in 2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation. Together, they rallied different sectors together to give back and support local causes and communities.

And as New Zealand will be the first in the world to welcome Tuesday 29th November, we look forward to leading the way.
