More Than 150 Kiwi Charities Took Part in First New Zealand #GivingTuesday Movement

Media Release    I    December 5, 2014
From household names like The Red Cross, Forest & Bird and World Vision to small charities serving their local communities, nonprofits across Aotearoa rallied together on the inaugural #GivingTuesday in New Zealand.

The goal of #GivingTuesday is to harness the power of many to inspire people to support their favourite charities by volunteering, donating or lending their voices during the Christmas period. This was the first time so many New Zealand charities and not-for-profits have banded together for a single cause.

Of the participating charities, 90 were members of the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand.

Kiwis were encouraged to give back to their favourite causes at the start of the giving season leading up to Christmas. Clearly many did.

Givealittle, an online fundraising platform, reported that the total value of donations on #GivingTuesday was 25.39 percent higher than the Tuesday the week prior.

“It’s been great to have been involved. As well as the generous donations…it’s been amazing to have so much engagement from the community. We are so lucky to have the support of so many people from all around the Greater Wellington and Wairarapa communities,” said Diane Livingston, Executive Manager, Communications and Fundraising, at Wellington Free Ambulance.

#GivingTuesday is supported by the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand (FINZ), Philanthropy New Zealand, TechSoup New Zealand and Volunteering New Zealand.
